2010 Cele Cohen Award

The Cele Cohen Award was established for the purpose of recognizing the contributions of Cecelia Cohen to public health nursing and to the Arizona Public Health Association's Nursing Section.

This award is to recognize a public/community health nurse within Arizona that has made an outstanding contribution to public/community health. Nominations can be made by anyone with a knowledge of a nurse's outstanding contribution to public/community health nursing in Arizona.

2010 Commitment to Underserved People (CUP) Award

This award honors those that have demonstrated a sustained effort in assuring the delivery of health services to underserved populations in Arizona. 

2010  Harold B. Woodward Award

This award honors an AzPHA member for their work in the advancement or betterment of the Arizona Public Health Association 

 

2010 Andy Nichols Award

This award honors those who have made outstanding contributions to public health. The award is named after the late Senator Andy Nichols, an advocate for good public health policy.

2009 HEMMY (Health Education Media Makers Yearly) AWARDS

Professional Other HEMMY winner is the newborn hearing screening training curriculum submitted by the EAR Foundation of Arizona –

The training DVD was piloted in AZ hospitals and more than 2000 copies have been distributed internationally. Each birthing hospitals in AZ has received a copy and most are now using the DVD as the basis for training their new screeners.

Professional Campaign HEMMY winner is the Keep your family safe: stop gun violence submitted by Arizonans for gun safety –

The keep your family safe: stop gun violence campaign was a bilingual campaign that ran May- June 2009 and focused on South Mountain and Maryvale communities. Overall 600,000 residents in the target communities as well as in the surrounding areas were reached. During the campaign 78 guns were taken of the street in the buyback program and 50 gun locks with gun safety tips were given away for free to residents.

Grassroots campaign HEMMY winner is the Drowning Prevention window display submitted by Kacie Birkmeyer and the greater valley area health education center.

The drowning prevention window display was located in the GVAHEC@LifeBridge health education center. The focus of the campaign was to educate Rio Salado ESL and GED students on drowning prevention information. At the time of the campaign 175 students were registered in the program.

Grassroots other first place HEMMY winner is the Perez family website submitted by AHCCCS.

The Perez family website was developed to improve health literacy in Arizona’s Hispanic community and increase compliance with Doctor’s prescribed orders and encourage self-management of chronic illness. English and Spanish speaking Hispanic AHCCCS members related well to the characters. One woman described it well by saying, “The Perez Family does not look exactly like my family, but I know each one of them from somewhere in my life. They face the dilemmas we face each day.”

 Grassroots other second place HEMMY winner is the Emergency OB posters submitted by Arizona Perinatal Trust. 

The posters were developed to provide information and assistance to health care providers in the state who find themselves caring for an emergent OB patient in a setting without obstetrical services. The first 100 have been delivered to 24 ER’s and to all the fire and ambulance services that provide emergency services. Arizona Perinatal Trust recently allocated funds for a second printing of 100 more posters that will be delivered to additional hospitals and education settings that request posters.

Grassroots other third place HEMMY winner is the Happy Moms, Healthy Babies: Gestational diabetes submitted by Mariposa Community Health.

The happy moms, healthy babies gestational diabetes curriculum is a 7 session intervention that was developed using a multi disciplinary team approach. It is available in both English and Spanish and can be used by a promotora for a small group or on an individual (pre-natal home visit) basis. The curriculum is intended for use as an educational and support tool to reinforce the clinical care treatment plan. Mariposa CHC has currently been funded to pilot test the curriculum with 30 gestational diabetics during the next year in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the project.
