Josh’s career has focused on public health both as an educator and a practitioner and more specifically, has recently dealt with the transition of public health from direct services to policy, systems, and environmental change.  He is currently the Management Analyst for Maricopa County’s Office of Nutrition and Physical Activity (ONPA), where he is working to improve program evaluation efforts in order to validate public spending on the Supplemental Nutrition and Physical Education (SNAP-Ed) program.  He is also the Education Cloud Leader for Maricopa County and is passionate about improving healthy eating and active living in our Arizona schools. 

He has a history of working in public health policy, program evaluation, and wellness, as well as past work and teaching experience in exercise physiology, physical fitness, and strength and conditioning.   Josh has worked as: the Health in Arizona Policy Initiative (HAPI) coordinator for Gila County working with worksite wellness initiatives, a public health officer for the city of San Antonio working to implement policies to combat the obesity epidemic in San Antonio, and as a Coordinator for the Cardiac Rehabilitation and wellness programs for the Wellness Connection of the Greater Dayton Region in Ohio.  He comes to Arizona after four years of graduate course work at Purdue University where he also instructed exercise physiology courses and won the 2012 Excellence in Graduate Teaching award from the University.  He is currently taking graduate courses in healthy aging and active living in order to complete an additional graduate degree in Gerontology. 

He currently holds certifications through the National Wellness Institute as a Wellness Practitioner (CWP), Worksite Wellness Specialist (CWWS), and Worksite Wellness Program Manager(CWWPM).  He also holds certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist(CSCS) and as a Personal Trainer(CPT).  Lastly, he is passionate about well informed and evidenced based health education and is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) with the National Commission for Health Education Counseling.

His current efforts are focused on Arizona’s adoption of the President’s Youth Fitness Challenge program including its FITNESSGRAM and NUTRIGRAM components.  Josh loves to network his passion for public health and is a firm believer that great things can be accomplished when we use our collective influence to create change.
